Man, it's been a very difficult winter so far. At least in here in Naperville. We've gone from the 50's to sub zero temps. This morning, my backyard thermometer read -9 degrees! Very cold.
But Weather Bug said the relative humidity was 97 % outside. So, you might think your guitar is nice and safe. Probably not. If you run your furnace to keep it warm in the house, you will probably lower your RH tremendously. You need to use a hygrometer or humidity meter to monitor the humidity. You can get them at guitar stores or Radio Shack or just about anywhere.
I try to keep my RH in the 40's but that means that, in this old house, I have a furnace humidifier and two stand alone humidifiers that I fill with water several times a day.
It seems like a lot of work, but when you're protecting a valuable guitar, it's worth the effort.
So, use a meter so you know where the RH is , at least in the room that your store your guitar. Keep it in the hardshell case, on the floor but away from heat sources.
Thanks, keep playing guitar,
Terry Schafer
